Philosophy

The word “meek” has come to mean something it was never meant to mean.  Modern definitions include: overly submissive or compliant; spiritless; tame.  These modern definitions couldn’t be further from the truth.  Back in 1828, when the first official Webster’s Dictionary was released, the definition looked more like this:

Mild of temper; soft; gentle; not easily provoked or irritated; yielding; given to forbearance under injuries.  Appropriately, humble, in an evangelical sense; submissive to the divine will; not proud, self-sufficient or refractory; not peevish and apt to complain of divine dispensations.

With this definition of meek in mind, Modo Mitis accentuates power that has been brought under control.  So never confuse being meek for being weak.  Weakness has no place in Modo Mitis.  We thoroughly believe techniques that do not hold up under pressure are not techniques worth learning for self-defense.  This is not to degrade other arts for their health, historical, or philosophical value.  It simply means that not all techniques are valuable for defending oneself in a real-world situation.  That is why we employ sparring and pressure testing of techniques to make sure we can demonstrate their effectiveness.  We believe that fitness of mind and body is the underlying foundation of proper self-defense.

Moreover, our defensive structure is heavily influenced by Christian principles, believing that the best attitudes, philosophies, and examples of defensive strategy come from God's divine word as found in the Holy Bible.

Ultimately, Modo Mitis was created as a combination of several arts to be a practical, simple to learn, and highly testable self defense system.  It has it's major roots in Karate, Wrestling, and Jiu-Jitsu while being influenced by Judo, Wing Chun, and Boxing.

Belt Rankings

Like many martial art styles, Modo Mitis employs a belt ranking system.  In some instances, it may feel that moving up from one level to the next is relatively simple, and in other instances it may feel a little overwhelming.  Sometimes this is simply because people learn at different speeds and occasionally some will take longer to grasp certain concepts.  Other times this is due to the time an individual puts into their training.  Most often, it will be because certain levels require a more rounded knowledge and focus to move forward.  While no belt rank is fully indicative of an individual’s combat prowess, it demonstrates mastery of key elements within the system itself.  Unlike many other styles, however, Modo Mitis employs a uniform style change that will reflect a current area of study.  While all of these areas will be studied by students of every rank, each new area has a considerably stronger focus on different practices.  Blue uniforms emphasize striking, blocking, and footwork.  Black uniforms emphasize grappling.  White uniforms emphasize situational awareness and opponent control.  Red uniforms emphasize teaching others.  Belts and Uniforms will be awarded upon test completion.  The ranking system is as follows:

Initiate - No Uniform:  No Belt

Beginner - Blue Uniform:  White Belt, White Belt w/Yellow Stripe, Yellow Belt, Yellow Belt w/Green Stripe, Green Belt, Green Belt w/Orange Stripe

Intermediate - Black Uniform: Orange Belt, Orange Belt w/Blue Stripe, Blue Belt, Blue Belt w/Purple Stripe, Purple Belt

Advanced - White Uniform:  Red Belt, Brown Belt, Black Belt

Instructor - Black/Red Uniform:  Black Belt w/White Stripe, Black Belt w/Green Stripe, Black Belt w/Blue Stripe, Black Belt w/Red Stripe
